SYDNEY – Federal Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Minister John Baird and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway Peter MacKay announced today that $17.55 million will be invested into Cape Breton infrastructure.
“Highway 125 from Sydney River to Grand Lake Road is going to be twinned thanks to the $15.3 million investment announced this morning,” said Cape Breton West MLA Alfie MacLeod. “The twinning will go a long way to eliminate head-on collisions along this treacherous stretch of highway.”
Funding for a new bridge in Victoria County was also announced this morning. Both projects will be funded through Building Canada, as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan.
“I was pleased to hear the federal government is contributing up $2.25 million to construct a new Hume River Bridge on Highway 105,” said Victoria-The Lakes MLA Keith Bain. “The new bridge will help get Cape Bretoners home safely to their families and I thank the federal government for their contribution.”
In addition to work on the Hume River Bridge, tenders will close for a contract to replace guardrail on the Big Baddeck Bridge along Highway 105 on November 19. The work follows a serious accident last February where an Acadian Lines bus crashed through a guardrail.
