HANTS WEST – Hants West MLA Chuck Porter is extending congratulations to Hants County resident Billy Smith, who was awarded Nova Scotia's Medal of Bravery by the premier today for quick thinking that saved the life of a young car accident victim two years ago.

The Cambridge man became a hero when he stopped at the scene of the crash in Bramber, Hants County on November 12, 2007, where one man was killed and a 14-year-old passenger lie trapped in the burning wreckage, crying out for help.

Fighting the flames to pull her to safety, the young woman survived. Since then, Porter has worked to make sure Smith received public recognition for his selfless efforts; this morning, he became one of three Nova Scotians to be awarded the 2009 medal for courageous acts.

"Billy's first thought was to stop and assist these people, even though it meant risking his own life," Porter said. "Everyone who has heard the story of how he carried the injured girl to safety knows he is a hero, but the presentation of this medal is a way of saying thank you on behalf of our community, and all Nova Scotians."

This is the second year Nova Scotia's Medal of Bravery has been presented.
