TUSKET – After three months of silence from Health Minister Maureen MacDonald, the Municipality of the District of Argyle finally received word that Nakile should scale down their expansion plan.
“Seniors in Argyle have been waiting for the 22-bed expansion of the Nakile Home for Special Care since I announced it as Health Minister over two years ago,” said Argyle MLA Chris d’Entremont. “Darrell Dexter assured Nova Scotians that he would honour commitments made by the former government but I guess that does not apply to promises made to senior citizens in Argyle.”
Months ago the situation had become critical for Nakile. The construction proposals for the planned 22-bed expansion expired on September 30 and with construction costs continually rising, residents feared the worst.
And now the Ministry is suggesting that Nakile scale back its expansion plans to a mere 12 additional beds.
“This is a slap in the face to the Nakile Home for Special Care,” said d’Entremont. “Concerns have been expressed that the costs associated with only expanding 12 additional beds is prohibitive. The Minister should have come to the table to figure out a solution when the cries from our community started and before the construction proposals expired.”
The Nakile Home For Special Care, a 35-bed long term care facility, opened its doors to seniors in 1989 and has since become an integral part of the community.
