HALIFAX – Progressive Conservative leader Karen Casey is congratulating Premier Darrell Dexter on honouring a commitment to the Africville project.

“The former government made major inroads to get to where we as a province are today – contributing $1.5 million over three years to help build an interpretive centre and a church on the Africville site,” said Casey. “I am very pleased that Premier Dexter and his government did the right thing in recognizing and then following through to right this historical wrong.”

Approximately forty years ago, homes, schools and churches were bulldozed on the site, resulting in the significant loss of heritage and livelihood for the community residents.

The Nova Scotia government has spent five years working alongside the Africville Genealogy Society to come to a solution for an appropriate memorial for the former Africville community.

“I commend the premier and his colleagues for continuing to invest in this worthwhile project,” added Casey. “Only good can come of this initiative, and it begins with the ability to heal.”
