Dexter misleading Nova Scotians, the trend continues

Feb 26 2010Halifax – Progressive Conservative leader Karen Casey is calling on Darrell Dexter to admit that he misled Nova Scotians during last year’s election campaign.
Yesterday, Chief Electoral Officer Christine McCulloch fined the NDP Party $10,000, the maximum amount allowed by Nova Scotian law, for failing to return $45,000 in illegal campaign contributions.
“Yesterday’s ruling confirms what PC Party officials claimed during the election, that this money was illegal,” said Casey. “Mr. Dexter owes it to Nova Scotians to admit that he misled them during the election.”
Dexter stated during the campaign that he had directed staff to pay back the donations. He also contacted media on June 1 to say that the money had been refunded.
Yesterday we learned that did not happen.
Dexter's comment at that time was, "We did exactly what we were supposed to do. We acted entirely appropriately.”
“Darrell Dexter is the leader of his Party," added Casey. "To direct staff to repay the money and then not to hold them accountable to that action is a failure on his part to show leadership. Further to that, to state that the money had been repaid is another attempt to mislead."
“This attempt to mislead Nova Scotians is a trend that continues, having started with his other campaign promises to honour previous government commitments, to balance the budget, to not raise taxes and to not cut programs. Darrell Dexter has lost credibility in the eyes of Nova Scotians.”
