OTTAWA – Members of the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Caucus began two days of federal meetings on the province’s infrastructure and economic sustainability with a presentation to the Atlantic Caucus this morning.
The delegation, including acting party leader Cecil Clarke, Murray Scott, Keith Bain, Allan MacMaster, Chris d’Entremont and Alfie MacLeod met with Atlantic MPs and senators assembled for the reconvening of Parliament this afternoon.
The presentation marked the start of a series of meetings aimed at ensuring federal ministries are aware of some of the challenges facing Nova Scotia, and to strengthen federal-provincial relations.
“We are here on behalf on Nova Scotians to make sure the needs of our province are being effectively communicated to our federal leaders,” Clarke said, following the presentation to Atlantic MPs
including ACOA Minister Keith Ashfield and Defense Minister Peter MacKay.
“The Dexter government is failing to do its job in bringing key issues to the table in Ottawa, so our caucus has taken the initiative to do that through a series of meetings that will hopefully bridge the gap, and allow us to work together on viable strategies.”
Open dialogue on issues such as transportation, the provincial fishery, infrastructure, justice and job creation will continue throughout the afternoon. The delegation has been invited to observe the Speech from the Throne, and will focus tomorrow’s itinerary on points that may impact Nova Scotia.
“It is critical for provincial representatives to be working in partnership with our Atlantic colleagues in Ottawa,” said Clarke. “Our goal is to come away knowing that they are aware of our current priorities, and to engage them in meaningful discussions on how we can better address issues that will shape the future of Nova Scotia.”
For the purpose of transparency, an update will be released tomorrow and will include a summary of associated travel costs.
