TUSKET – On Thursday morning, a group of local young people will set out to raise awareness and funds for the IWK Health Centre by biking from Yarmouth to Halifax, in an event organized by youth, for youth.
“IW300K ride organizer, Luke Murphy, set an ambitious but achievable goal for the team to raise $10,000 for the IWK Health Centre,” said Argyle MLA Chris d’Entremont. “I encourage Nova Scotians to donate to their cause and wish them the very best of luck on their long journey.”
Though no longer considered a youth, d’Entremont is an avid cyclist and knows first hand the difficulty of long bike rides and the stamina required to push through. He hopes that Luke and the other IW300K team members will inspire more young people to take up cycling.
“I see this ride in support of the IWK as an opportunity to also raise awareness to the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle,” said d’Entremont. “Young people tend to view exercise in a negative light and that is an attitude that we all have to work to change. This event is a step in the right direction.”
The IW300K team will be accepting cash and cheque donations at the following locations and times along their route:
- Thursday, May 27 Yarmouth Regional Hospital, 8-8.45am;
- Friday, May 28 Best Western Liverpool Hotel, 8-8.45am;
- Saturday, May 29 Nicki’s Inn, Chester, 8-8.45am; and
- Sunday, May 30 Halifax North Common, 2.30-5pm.
d’Entremont is slated to bike part of the way with the team Thursday. Sunday, May 30, members of the public are invited to join the IW300K team on a bike ride around Halifax, starting at the Westin Nova Scotian at noon.
