Truro – Progressive Conservative leader, Karen Casey, is calling on Premier Darrell Dexter and Liberal leader Stephen McNeil to support Cape Breton Regional Municipality Mayor John Morgan’s request to be the official proponent of the Sydney Harbour dredge project.

In a letter addressed to the Premier and Mr. McNeil, Casey asks for “all Party provincial support for the request of the Mayor (Morgan) to recognize and fund Nova Scotia’s second largest municipality’s number one infrastructure project.”

Casey has asked for all-leader support of the request to Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

“It is time to get all three provincial leaders on the same page, so I am asking the Premier and Mr. McNeil to consider being part of a delegation to meet with the Prime Minister,” said Casey. “We must do what is right for the community, and if that requires a nonpartisan meeting with all leaders, then we must do it. It is the only way to finalize this very important infrastructure project.”

Casey believes that by supporting Mayor Morgan’s request to be the project proponent, more attention will be brought to the issue, allowing for a tri-federal-provincial-municipal partnership.

“This goes beyond politics,” added Casey. “We have a community in need of an economic boost; it is time for us to all come together to make this project a reality. Maybe this is the first step in restoring faith and trust in our political system by showing the people of Cape Breton that we are able to work together for the common good. We owe them that much.”

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality recently named the dredge of Sydney Harbour as their number one infrastructure priority.
