ACOA study proves one thing: Dexter had it wrong

Halifax – Argyle MLA Chris d’Entremont is pleased to see the results of an ACOA-commissioned transportation study released yesterday.
The study confirms something d’Entremont has known all along – that removing the ferry service would only hurt the people of Yarmouth County.
“I am not interested in saying ‘I told you so’,” said d’Entremont. “The study speaks for itself. I am more concerned with the next steps and how this government plans to deal with the issue.”
In December when the decision to remove the subsidy was made, Premier Dexter announced that he was waiting to see the results of the transportation study before making any further decisions on the future of Yarmouth County.
“We have the study, and it clearly shows that links to New England and New Brunswick are crucial to the region’s transportation system and economy,” added d’Entremont. “If this government is seriously concerned with the economy, I would expect them to have a plan in place to deal with the growing concerns we have in Yarmouth County.”
“They have had more than seven months to come up with a plan.”
However, last week, Economic and Rural Development Minister Percy Paris stated that his government was not even looking for a new operator for the service.
Concerned with the minister’s statement, d’Entremont is now calling for a non-partisan meeting between all three parties to discuss alternatives to the ferry service.
“I would like us to get together to discuss a go-forward plan,” said d’Entremont. “There are people in Yarmouth County and throughout the province who want answers, not politics or the blame game.”
