TRURO – Nova Scotians experienced Tax Freedom Day seven days later in 2010 than they did in 2009 thanks to the new tax structures levied by the NDP government.
“I have consistently maintained that the income tax increases and the two per cent rise in HST introduced by the NDP government will be detrimental to Nova Scotians, and, unfortunately, that turned out to be true,” said Colchester North MLA Karen Casey. “Tax Freedom Day was seven days later this year than it was in 2009. Nova Scotia experienced the largest increase of all Canadian provinces.”
The Fraser Institute, a public policy research and education organization, calculates Tax Freedom Day based on projected incomes and federal and provincial tax revenue.
“The Progressive Conservative Caucus voted against the NDP budget but we were unable to stop these regressive tax measures from proceeding,” said Casey. “They were not right for Nova Scotians and we are seeing the negative effects of them now.”
Tax Freedom Day is a representation of the amount of annual tax the average family has to pay to government. If Nova Scotian families were required to pay all of their taxes up front, they would have to pay each and every dollar they earned to governments prior to Tax Freedom Day. This year, it took Nova Scotians until June 4 to reach that point.
