SPRINGHILL – Cumberland South MLA Murray Scott is calling on Natural Resources Minister John MacDonell to solicit input from wood-lot owners before any more major decisions are made about the management of wood lots in Nova Scotia.
“I have been contacted over the last number of weeks by wood-lot owners, both large and small, with concerns about changes to wood-lot management that would greatly affect them,” said Scott. “I believe it is vital that Nova Scotians be given the opportunity to provide input, especially those who own and manage their own wood-lots, and who make their livelihood in the forestry sector.”
Scott concedes that while there may be needed changes, the process of more permits and regulations will become cumbersome for many lot owners, and will greatly impact the opportunity for woodland owners to manage their own lots.
“On behalf of all Cumberland County residents, I wrote a letter to the Minister to bring these concerns to his attention,” said Scott. “I have asked to be informed as to what level of stakeholder participation and feedback Natural Resources has sought from owners to date, with whom the Minister has already met, and if he is planning to give Nova Scotians an opportunity to take part in discussions before any such changes are made.”
Scott has requested a meeting with MacDonell as soon as possible to discuss the matter.
