Tories stand firm on travel, expenses

Halifax – The Progressive Conservative Caucus announced today that they will be standing firm on the position which they took last fall not to travel outside of Nova Scotia to conferences and meetings when the focus needs to be here at home.

“Times have changed significantly,” said Progressive Conservative leader Karen Casey.  “The real concerns at the present time are here in Nova Scotia.  How can we be sending Members at the expense of taxpayers to conferences and meetings that do not contribute to solving our problems at home?”

Casey is arguing that the state of the province’s finances and the recent decision of ExxonMobil not to go ahead with an expansion of the province’s only offshore gas-producing development should keep all politicians focused on remaining at home.

“We should be busy working on these issues,” added Casey. “In the past year, we have gone from having a marginal surplus to adding more than one billion dollars to the provincial debt under this government.  The issues are here, not abroad.”
