Truro – Progressive Conservative leader Karen Casey is urging the Dexter NDP government to weigh the consequences of not having a convention centre located in the heart of Halifax.
Yesterday, developer Joe Ramia of Rank Inc. submitted his proposal to the Dexter government after the deadline had been extended on two previous occasions.
“I would seriously hope that the government would give this file more than its due diligence,” said Casey. “The current space is an eye sore to locals and tourists who visit our downtown core on a daily basis. More than ever, now is the time to demonstrate true economic leadership.”
Studies released by the government two months ago show that a new convention centre would generate huge economic spin offs through the creation of permanent jobs and an increasing tax base.
Speculation that the government is torn over what to do with the project has kept many in the business community on edge.
“The Premier must understand how important this project is to all stakeholders and ,more importantly, to the growth and development of our province,” said Casey.
“I certainly respect the government’s decision to review this file in complete detail,” added Casey. “However, there comes a time when studies and procrastination should be cast aside. People really want to see this project move forward.”
