Baillie applauds elimination of long-gun registry

HALIFAX, NS – Cumberland South MLA and Progressive Conservative leader Jamie Baillie is applauding the federal Conservative government's decision to scrap the wasteful and inefficient long-gun registry.

“This has been a long time coming for many in rural Nova Scotia,” said Baillie. “The long-gun registry has long been a thorn in the side of farmers and recreational hunters and I'm pleased our Conservative government has gotten rid of it once and for all.”

The vote to scrap the long-gun registry occurred Wednesday in the House of Commons. All Nova Scotia Liberal and NDP Members of Parliament voted against scrapping the registry and in favor of continued wasteful spending.

“Criminals were still committing crimes, even though billions of dollars were wasted making farmers and recreational hunters register their long-guns,” said Baillie. “Thanks to the hard work of Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley MP Scott Armstrong and the Nova Scotia Conservative team, this failed registry will soon be behind us.”

Baillie says he will continue to put pressure on Nova Scotia's NDP government and urge them not to replace the federal registry with one of their own.

“We know the NDP supported the federal registry and were sad to see it go,” said Baillie. “They should listen to the voices of ordinary Nova Scotians and ensure our province does not follow the federal Liberals’ path with another bureaucratic boondoggle.”
