Cape Breton Tories applaud elimination of long-gun registry

SYDNEY, NS – Cape Breton’s Progressive Conservative MLAs are applauding the federal Conservative government's decision to scrap the wasteful and inefficient long-gun registry.

“Rural Nova Scotia has been waiting a long time for this,” said Victoria-The Lakes MLA Keith Bain. “I'm pleased our Conservative government did what was right and thanks to the hard work of the Nova Scotia Conservative team, this failed registry will soon be behind us.”

“The long-gun registry has been the subject of lots of debate from the start but today, farmers and recreational hunters will celebrate,” said Cape Breton West MLA Alfie MacLeod.

The vote to scrap the long-gun registry occurred Wednesday in the House of Commons. All Nova Scotia Liberal and NDP Members of Parliament, including Cape Breton MPs Mark Eyking and Rodger Cuzner, voted against scrapping the registry and in favor of continued wasteful spending.

“This was the right decision,” said Cape Breton North MLA Eddie Orrell. “The long-gun registry didn’t prevent criminals from committing crimes and it has wasted billions of dollars.”

The PC MLAs say they will continue to put pressure on Nova Scotia's NDP government and urge them not to replace the federal registry with one of their own.

“Nova Scotia NDP MPs supported the long-gun registry and I’m sure they’d like to see a provincial one take its place,” said Inverness MLA Allan MacMaster.

The PC’s say the provincial NDP should listen to the voices of rural Nova Scotians to ensure our province does not follow the federal Liberals’ path with another bureaucratic boondoggle.
