Auditor General slams NDP’s deficit spending

HALIFAX, NS – PC Leader Jamie Baillie agrees with the Auditor General’s report today that the NDP government’s deficits raise “ethical questions”.

After promising to balance the budget in their first year of government, the NDP has instead presented three red ink budgets.

“In condemning the NDP’s deficits, the Auditor General has put the spotlight on this government’s unethical overspending. All of this ends up as debt for our children,” said Baillie.

The NDP have added a half a billion dollars in new debt in only two years of government according to Public Accounts documents. The debt now stands at $12.8 billion, or $13,610 for every man, woman and child in Nova Scotia.

“The NDP said they raised the HST to tackle the deficit, but all they did was spend it,” said Baillie. “Promising one thing and doing the opposite is wrong. Raising taxes and driving up debt will cost jobs and hurt our economy.”

Baillie said a PC government would bring back the balanced budget legislation that NDP irresponsibly cast aside as soon as they became government.

“Today’s Auditor General’s report highlights the difference between the NDP’s irresponsible approach and the PC Party’s commitment to balanced budgets,” added Baillie.
