Workers and community can find success again

HALIFAX, NS – The following is a statement from Progressive Conservative leader Jamie Baillie on the news of the idling of the Mersey newsprint mill in Queens County:

“Our thoughts today are with the hundreds of workers and their families directly and indirectly impacted by the decision to end operations.  We believe the workers, management and the community did all they could to save the mill.

We are committed to working toward a new beginning for the mill. It is our strong belief that the workers and community, who have made the mill a success before, can make it a success again.

There is a future for the forestry industry. Today we must begin by re-dedicating ourselves to building a modern, sustainable industry based on value-added products and growing world markets, supported by strong, local foundation of lower taxes, affordable power rates and a positive labour market."
